Eating Disorders and Bone Health

The prevalence of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and related morbidity and mortality continues to increase (up to 4%). Anorexia nervosa is associated with conditions of low body weight and malnutrition which increase the risk of low bone mineral density (BMD).

Low bone mass and micro-deterioration of bone tissue leads to bone fragility and increased risk of fractures. Additional threats to bone health may exist if the eating disorder occurs during a period of peak bone formation.

It is estimated that history of AN predicts a two to three times greater risk of bone fracture during a lifetime. Fractures and/or injury threaten overall physical and emotional health, quality of life and the ability to participate fully in sport and physical activities.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between eating disorders and bone density (BMD) was published in June of 2016 in Osteoporosis International. This study confirmed the association between low BMD and AN and argues for the importance of assessing BMD in patients with both AN and BN. Effective management and treatment strategies targeting BMD that do not have risk of uncomfortable or unhealthy side effects are limited.
