Teens and Young Adults

Some pharmacological agents may stabilize bone mineral density (BMD) among adults but there are few treatment options known to correct low BMD in adults.

Pharmacological agents are not appropriate for use among teens.

Weight restoration, regular menses and healthy diet appear to stabilize BMD but might not completely reverse bone loss. Estrogen replacement, (Estradriol patch) may stabilize BMD in adolescents but not entirely remedy bone loss occurring during periods of peak bone formation.

Given the limitations of current treatment strategies and the serious health consequences of low BMD, experts call for the development of new therapies that assist in bone reformation. Contact the Chicago bioDensity team to learn more.
